what to eat

Naiya has tried rice cereal, oat cereal, avocado and yams. Next is maybe peas or yogurt. What fun! It is still more an experiment for her than a nutritional experience. Today she gagged and threw up the yams. Maybe they were too thick or perhaps she was just not hungry. She's interested in the process but doesn't seem to connect it to eating. She has started drinking some water from a cup but mostly she puts some in her mouth and then it dribbles down her chin. Still... she does it over and over and that's something. She laughs so perhaps it is yet another fun and exciting game?

She's not pulling herself up to a sitting position yet, but does lean on one hand while she plays with something in the other. A few weeks ago I had thought she would start crawling soon, but now I am not so sure. She seems quite content with her current repertoire of movement... as if she doesn't see the need to get anywhere she isn't already.

wonderful world

Yesterday we had the most beautiful summer day. Even after the sun set, the warm breeze kept a-blowin'. We wore short pants and no shoes. It was lovely.
Today it is raining.
How we savor the Pacific Northwest. Really.
All green and flowers...
...skies of blue and clouds of white, the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night...
and I think to myself, what a wonderful world...

visitors

We've had some visitors recently... Naiya's Opa and Auntie Gayle stopped in for a day on their way home from Idaho and a few days later her Uncle, Auntie and cousins from California came and stayed for almost a week. A fun time was had by everyone. We took a walk through Tryon Creek State Park, traveled up to Timberline Lodge and played in the snow, spent a morning at the Children's Museum with Uncle Slade, Auntie Kelli and Hank (then had a fine dinner at their house). Yesterday, we visited my brother's rental houses and had lunch and more playtime with the kids. Mostly we spent their visit just... well, visiting and eating lots of baked goods.

six months old

Naiya turned six months old on the first of April (no fooling!) She is still her extraordinary self. She's rolling over regularly and sits up and plays with her bucket of toys and cups for long periods of time--only occasionally falling over. Her next doctor's appointment is Thursday so I will get more accurate measures then but according to our amateur calculations and home measuring mechanisms she weighs 19 pounds and is 26 1/2 inches tall (still a really big girl). Some days she makes lots of noise but nothing like words yet. Other days she's very quiet. She does do lots of spitting and gurgling experiments in her free time and is just perfecting some of her more difficult yoga moves. We've tried eating cereal a couple of times. She doesn’t seem happy about it...

the cars go by

Today we sat outside and watched cars go by. Strange I know. I was trying to introduce her to plants and all the pretty flowers blooming but she only had eyes for the cars.

She’s moving more lately. She kicks a lot and holds up her feet when laying on her back. She rolls over a couple of times a day from her tummy to her back but because she doesn't like being on her tummy she has no motivation to roll the other direction. She still likes to stand and she loves jumping in her jumpy seat. She has also started grabbing at things more and more often. Also, she isn't a thumb sucker but rather puts her whole hand minus her pinky in her mouth... for pleasure or to sooth upcoming teeth?... I'm not sure.

She’ll sit up for about 30 seconds before she just falls over. That’s the big news.
We went for a little walk in the Camp Sherman neighborhood today where grandma and grandpa live. Naiya decided to take a nap...
